AUSTRALIA PARENT VISA


Are you the parent of a child who is an Australian citizen or Australia Permanent Resident or an Eligible New Zealand Citizen and want to live with your child in Australia? Read on to find out the different types of parent visas you may apply for, requirements to qualify for the parent visa, application fees and processing times.

Contributory Parent Visa Pathway (SC 173 & SC 143)

Parents can split the high financial contribution and apply in 2 stages: moving from a temporary visa to full Permanent Residency.

STAGE 1: TEMPORARY

Subclass 173 Visa

Allows parents to stay in Australia for up to 2 years while spreading out the costs of the permanent migration application fee.


📋 Key Requirements

  • Sponsored by an eligible adult child (Australian Citizen/PR).
  • Must pass the Balance of Family test.
  • Meet standard health, character, and public interest criteria.
  • No outstanding debts to the Australian Government.

💰 Visa Application Charges

(Example based on 2 parents + 1 dependent child)

  • 1st Installment (At Lodgement): A$7,435
    ($4,245 main + $2,125 partner + $1,065 child)
  • 2nd Installment (Before Grant): A$60,300
    ($29,130 per parent + $2,040 child)

⏳ Estimated Processing Times

New Applicants: Approximately 15 years.
(As of 30 April 2026, existing applications are processed up to a queue date of November 2018).

STAGE 2: PERMANENT RESIDENCY

Subclass 143 Visa

The permanent residency visa. Can be applied for directly, or as a transition step within 2 years of holding the temporary SC 173.


📋 Key Requirements

  • Must hold or have held the temporary SC 173 visa in the 28 days prior to applying.
  • Maintains all core requirements from the temporary stage.
  • Assurance of Support (AoS): Provide a legal bank guarantee from 1-3 individuals or organization for up to 10 years.

💰 Visa Application Charges

(Example transitioning from 173 for 2 parents + 1 child)

  • 1st Installment (At Lodgement): A$675
    ($385 main + $195 partner + $95 child)
  • 2nd Installment (Before Grant): A$39,240
    ($19,420 per parent + $400 child)

Processed dynamically once transitioning from the temporary stream, tracking parallel to the parent queue framework.

Non-Contributory Parent Visa (SC 103)

LOW COST / HIGH WAIT TIME

Subclass 103 Permanent Visa

A highly budget-friendly permanent visa option, but heavily restricted by an annual queue cap that results in multi-decade wait times.

📋 Core Requirements

  • Must be sponsored by an eligible adult child.
  • Must pass the Balance of Family test.
  • Must obtain a formal Assurance of Support.
  • Cannot hold or have applied for a Sponsored Parent Temporary Visa (SC 870).
  • Must sign the Australian Values Statement and pass health/character bounds.

💰 Visa Application Charges

  • Main Applicant: A$6,600
  • Additional Adult (18+): A$3,300
  • Dependent Child (<18): A$1,655

⏳ Queue & Processing Times

Due to government caps, new applications face an estimated wait time of up to 33 years.
(As of 30 April 2026, applications queued up to February 2014 are currently being released for processing).
