Temporary work visa is for suitably skilled workers, sponsored by Australian employers, to work in Australia for a temporary period. Temporary work visa holders can apply for permanent residence visa after working for specified years and meeting the visa conditions. Temporary skills visa provide several visa options including the Skills in Demand Visa that replaced the popular Temporary Skills Shortage Visa.
SKILLS IN DEMAND VISA (SC 482 Visa)
Skills in Demand Visa (SID Visa) replaces the Temporary Skill Shortage Visa and is valid for 4 years (5 years for Hong Kong passport holders). It provides a clear pathway to secure permanent residence as any work with the approved employer counts towards permanent residence. This visa has the following 3 streams:
- Core Skills Stream
- Specialist Skills Stream
- Labour Agreement Stream
Core Skills Stream
There is no minimum age requirement for Core Skill Visa Stream and to qualify, you must:
- be nominated by an approved employer to work in an occupation on the Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL);
- meet the Core Skills Income Threshold at time of nomination (currently A$ 73,150 p.a.);
- nominate an occupation on the Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL);
- have at least 1 year work relevant experience in your nominated occupation;
- have a positive skills assessment, unless exempted;
- if nominated by an Australian business sponsor, you must work for that business or an associated entity, unless exempted;
- if nominated by an Overseas business sponsor, you must work for that business only, unless exempted;
- have adequate health insurance;
- meet English, Health and Character requirements.
Specialist Skills Stream
Specialist Skills Stream
the There is no minimum age requirement even for Specialist Skills Stream and to qualify, you must:
- be nominated by an approved employer to work in any occupation listed in Major Group 1,2,4,5,6 of ANZSCO;
- meet the Specialist Skills Income Threshold at time of nomination (currently A$ 135,000 p.a);
- nominate an occupation on the Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL);
- have at least 1 year work relevant experience in your nominated occupation;
- have a positive skills assessment, unless exempted;
- if nominated by an Australian business sponsor, you must work for that business or an associated entity, unless exempted;
- if nominated by an Overseas business sponsor, you must work for that business only, unless exempted;
- have adequate health insurance;
- meet English, Health and Character requirements.
Labour Agreement Stream
Australian government has entered into several Labour Agreements with the employers. To qualify for the Skills in Demand visa under the Labour Agreement Stream, you must:
- be nominated by an employer to work in an occupation in the relevant Labour Agreement;
- have at least 12 months work experience in your nominated or closely related occupation;
- have adequate health insurance;
- meet health, character and English language requirements.

SKILLED WORK REGIONAL (PROVISIONAL) VISA (SC 491 VISA)
Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) Visa is a points-based territory/state nominated or family sponsored visa valid for 5 years. This visa provides a step towards securing permanent residence visa after living and working in a designated regional area of Australia for 3 years . To qualify, skilled workers need to meet the following requirements:
- be aged between 18 and 44 years;
- nominate an occupation on relevant eligible skilled occupation list;
- have positive skills assessment for your nominated occupation;
- score at least 65 points;
- must be nominated by an Australian state or territory government agency or sponsored by an eligible relative;
- submit Expression of Interest (EOI) under SkillSelect;
- meet health, character and English language requirements;
- be invited to apply for this visa.

SKILLED EMPLOYER SPONSORED REGIONAL (PROV) VISA (SC 494 visa)
Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional (Provisional) Visa is an employer sponsored visa to work in a Designated Regional Area for upto 5 years. Visa holders can apply for permanent residence after living and working in regional Australia for 3 years. To qualify, skilled workers need to meet the following requirements:
- be aged between 18 and 44 years unless exempted;
- nominate an occupation on relevant eligible skilled occupation list;
- must have at least 3 years work experience in your nominated occupation;
- have positive skills assessment for your nominated occupation, unless exempted;
- must be nominated by an Employer who is an approved business sponsor;
- meet health, character and English language requirements.
