Changes To Skilled Migrant Category (SMC) Resident Visa

PUBLISHED: 23-Sep-2025

Immigration New Zealand has announced changes to the Skilled Migrant Category (SMC) Visa, including introduction of two new skilled resident visa pathways under the SMC. These changes including the new visa pathways will be effective from mid-2026

Two New Resident Visa Pathways Under The Skilled Migrant Category

The following two new resident visa sub-catogories under the Skilled Migrant Category, will commence in mid-2026 - namely Skilled Work Pathway and Trades and Technicians Pathway. These visas should benefit skilled and experienced workers to gain residence under the SMC visa.

Skilled Work Experience Pathway

This Skilled Migrant Category pathway is for migrants in a skilled occupation (ANZSCO Level 1-3), meeting additional eligibility criteria that may be prescribed for that occupation. Migrants applying under this pathway must have at least 5 years of directly relevant work experience, including 2 years in New Zealand earning at least 1.1 times the median wage.

Trades and Technician Pathway

This pathway is for migrants in specified Trades and Technician roles with relevant qualification at Level 4 or higher. They should have at least 4 years of post-qualification work experience, including 18 months in New Zealand earning at least the median wage.

Additional Changes

Increased Qualification Points

Points for New Zealand university-level qualifications will be increased. This will make it easier for graduates to transition to residence

Reduced Work Experience Requirements

Work experience requirements will be reduced from 3 years to 2 years for some existing pathways under the Skilled Migrant Category.

Wage Rate

Applicants will not be required to be employed at increased wage rate when applying for residence. They only need to maintain the required median wage rate throughout their period of New Zealand work experience.
